As a driver, you are probably well aware of the importance of having adequate insurance to drive your car legally and sensibly on the roads. As the proud owner of a touring caravan, it is equally as important to have both car and caravan insurance in place before you set out.
Security and responsibility
Many caravan insurance providers regard membership of a recognised caravanning club as a sign of a careful and responsible owner. You may find that there are worthwhile premium discounts available for members of such organisations.
Helping to protect your car and caravan from theft by fitting security devices and immobilisers is becoming a ‘must-have’ for many touring caravan insurance providers. You may find that many policies these days stipulate that wheel clamps and hitchlocks must be used in certain circumstances. If they are not used the caravan insurance policy may be invalidated.
A security alarm can help protect your contents from theft. It may pay to remember though that this cover typically only applies to those items (in addition to the fixtures and fittings) that you could be reasonably expected to take with you. While this may include things like a TV, video equipment and bicycles, items beloved by thieves like mobile phones, money and jewellery may well be excluded.
Car and caravan insurance – pay only for what you need
Some insurance providers may offer or may even include cover for taking your caravan abroad as part of a standard deal (often known as continental cover). If you know that you are going to stick to the highways and byways of the UK then buying additional cover for continental touring makes no sense. If you change your mind at a later date, you may be able to easily enhance your cover.
Awnings
Making sure that you stow your awning when you leave your caravan may help prevent damage whether malicious or due to a storm or flooding in your absence. Many policies may not cover damage to awnings left open while the owner is elsewhere.
Secure sites
A final method for potentially saving money on car and caravan insurance premiums is to keep your caravan in a secure storage site when it is not in use.
