Trailer tents are the perfect solution for people that want to enjoy the fun of camping with a few extra creature comforts. They’re much easier to store and tow than a caravan and can be put up with ease, offering the benefits of a caravan and tent combined. But just what is a trailer tent, and what types of models can you choose from?

In a nutshell, a trailer tent is a type of tent that’s stored in, and then folds out from, a trailer. The canvas walls are pegged down to create a large sleeping and living area, and the beds usually fold out from the main trailer body to offer off-the-ground sleeping. Some larger models come with additional awnings and inner tents, and from the outside it’s often difficult to tell the difference between a trailer tent and a regular large-frame tent.

But, there are plenty of other types that you might like to consider, with the above only being the beginning of your trailer tent journey. You can get a flip top trailer tent where the lid of the trailer folds down to form part of the floor, with the canvas being arranged and pegged down to provide the weather-proof covering. These can be erected incredibly quickly and again provide off-the-ground sleeping areas.

Or, for those that like an additional level of comfort there’s the folding camper, where the base unit comes complete with the amenities of a regular caravan (toilet, sink, cooker, beds etc.) with the canvas tent portion simply covering the top. With this type of trailer tent the entire camping unit is supported by the trailer, although many people choose to add additional awnings.

As you can see, there’s more to the trailer tent than meets the eye. Trailer tents can be ideal if you want a bit of added comfort on your camping trip and are perfect if you want to step up from a tent (or even step down from a caravan), and with so many to choose from you’ll soon find one that’s perfect for your needs.

Although you may tend to think of trailer tents as being the little brother of more conventional touring caravans, it may be comforting to know that trailer tent insurance can offer the same high levels of cover that are typically available for their bigger siblings.

New for old

The age of your trailer tent and the number of previous owners may typically be used to determine the basis of replacement should it be damaged beyond the point where repairs would be a realistic option.

You may also find that some policies may require that you have been the only owner of the vehicle from new to benefit from new for old replacement.

Awnings

Cover for awnings may be available as a separate option of trailer tent insurance and may be based on the requirement that the awning is securely stowed away whenever you leave your trailer tent – so as to help reduce the risk of damage from sudden storms.

Theft protection

The use of a hitchlock and a wheel clamp may be a requirement of your cover whenever your trailer tent is not attached to the towing vehicle and you are not present.

If attached to the towing vehicle then a wheel clamp may typically be all that is required, but do check your policy for clarification.

Discounts

As with touring caravans, you may find that discounts on premiums may be available in some circumstances.

For example:

choosing a site which has a good safety record in terms of flooding, thefts and vandalism;

belonging to a recognised caravan club or association;

fitting an approved tracking device.

These may all result in lower premiums for your trailer tent insurance without compromising on levels of cover provided – and that can only be a good thing!

Having one’s very own trailer tent can prove to be a great motivator when deciding on a much needed break. You have all the independence to go anywhere you wish and at any possible time. The thought of heading toward the hills or the beach and quickly pitching your trailer tent to “get away from it all” is not only exciting but allows you to get on the road very quickly. However, you would be in good stead to purchase a trailer tent insurance policy before you go. There are many insurance providers that offer different types of trailer tent policies, so it is best to apply for a few trailer tent insurance quotes first in order to decide on the best possible policy. There can be some limitations and exclusions, depending on the level of cover you choose, so be sure you know exactly what is and is not covered in the small print.

Most trailer tent insurance policies are available with excess payments. This is the amount that you will be required to pay before the insurer pays the rest. Policies that include excess payments should help to keep the overall premium costs more affordable. Let your provider know of safety measures in place when either storing your trailer tent, such as in your garage, or where you plan to go on holiday as this can influence your trailer tent insurance premium. Installing some sort of tracking or alarm devices can possibly help reduce the cost of the cover too.

One of the most important features to check in the trailer tent insurance policy is whether the insurer will payout new for the old. This simply means that you will be provided with brand new replacement in case your trailer tent is damaged beyond repair or outright stolen. Items such as expensive jewelry and electrical equipment may not be covered so you will need to check any limitations before taking the policy. If you have never taken out trailer tent insurance, you may be under the assumption everything is covered. You may want to write down the value of your trailer tent, any objects that may be associated with it such as equipment, furniture, etc. and decide what you would like to be replaced in the event of theft or damage. Then, bring these issues up with your provider to be sure you know if they are covered or not. Use common sense and do your best to thwart any would be thieves or parking in areas that may cause damage such as parking too close to the beach, under trees, close to busy roads etc. Some insurers, if they deem you were irresponsible in your use of your trailer tent may not pay out in the event of damage or theft.

The trailer tent policy terms and conditions can range from one provider to another but some of the typical points covered usually may be:

Coverage against trailer tent theft

Accidental damage while towing of the trailer tent

Public liability

Legal costs cover

Overseas recovery expenses following the accident and its repairs

New for old replacement cover

Take a few moments to compare trailer tent insurance online. There are many price comparison sites that should help shave time off the search for the best policy. Always ask questions about any aspect of a providers cover. And ultimately, you will get the most effective and suitable trailer tent insurance that will go very well with your needs and requirements while enjoying holidays with the loved ones.
