Having spent what may be a sizable sum of money on a motorhome, it may be tempting to try and economise on your motorcaravan insurance.
Yet insuring your motorcaravan may not be as expensive as you may think. There are a number of measures that you can take to help reduce your premium and keep costs down without necessarily reducing your level of cover.
Off-road vehicle
Leaving your motorcaravan on public roads may make it a bit of a target for thieves and vandals.
If you can park your motorcaravan on your driveway you may be able to help prevent these sorts of things happening to it. Fitting a security alarm or tracking device may also help keep it safe.
Fittings and fixtures
Awnings are particularly susceptible to storm damage. Convenient though it may be to leave the awning out, if you are not present and the awning is damaged in a storm then your policy may not cover you.
The weather in the UK (and elsewhere) can be temperamental, so it generally pays to play safe and stow the awning away if you are not there.
Since your motorcaravan may become your home-from-home at least once in the year when you go on holiday, it may be equipped to quite a high standard.
While you may (sensibly) not keep any one thing of particular valuable in there, the combined value of your home comforts may be sizable, particularly if you had to replace them all in one go. Making as accurate an assessment as possible of the value of your contents for your motorcaravan insurance is typically a good idea.
Holiday home
Providers of motorcaravan insurance typically regard them as recreational vehicles for holiday use only. Premiums may be based on the assumptions that;
- people tend to be less stressed when they are on holiday;
- motorhome owners may use their vehicles at off-peak times to avoid commuter traffic;
- typically drivers will choose smaller roads in preference to motorways;
- annual mileage will generally be low.
You may find that using your motorcaravan for commuting may invalidate your policy.
Premium discounts
Some motorcaravan insurance providers may reward owners who show that they are responsible and serious about motor caravan safety and security. So, for example, they may offer discounts if you are a member of a recognised motorcaravan club as they regard these clubs as useful sources of good practice hints and tips.
