Is your motorhome the second most precious asset you own after your home? If so, are you sufficiently insured? Studies have highlighted that a huge percentage of people are underinsured as far as their motorhomes are concerned. This can have really expensive consequences in case anything happens to the motorhome while it is in use. It is always better to have motorhome insurance whether you are on the road or parked in a holiday location. There are many fun spots you can travel to in your motorhome such as river banks, campsites or forested regions to name a few.  Accidents can happen when you least expect it. For example, if you park your motorhome under trees, high winds or a falling limb can cause expensive damage.

Also make certain that you have proper cover in the event of property damage, theft, or even bodily injuries. Liability claims are on the increase each year. So, check your motorhome insurance policy wisely to ensure you are properly covered. Also, ask your provider if your motorhome insurance policy covers other expenses such as towing and repairs, if needed.

Will you be the only person driving the motorhome? If not, what are the conditions and limits, if any, associated with protection of other drivers? Make certain that there is proper cover in case you face damage caused by an uninsured 3rd party. Are there any exclusions with your policy? If so, you may want to compare a few providers to make a better informed decision based on what is covered and the price of each policy. Another consideration is to find out the payout ratio of your provider. Will they pay you in the event you make a claim?

It is indeed better to obtain a motorhome insurance policy that covers personal belongings that will be in your motorhome, as well as external fittings such as your awnings. Large awnings, for instance, can be costly to replace. Specialist motorhome insurers should provide you with details of what is covered in your premium and if you are unsure about anything, always ask your provider. Moreover, do not make any assumptions. Be sure you understand exactly what is covered before leaving on your holiday.

When it comes to finally deciding on a provider, one word of caution would be to not assume that large insurers will provide the most amount of cover. For example, a well-known car insurer may offer motorhome insurance as a small subsection of their overall insurance portfolio, but it may not be their specialty whereas a specific motorhome insurer may be less known but provide a more comprehensive policy, even at a better rate! So, if you are set to spend your holiday domestically, don’t spoil the trip being underinsured, or having no motorhome insurance at all!
