Motorhomes are rarely low-cost items. As a result, motorhomes insurance isn’t exactly free either.
The good news is that there are a number of things you may wish to think about in terms of keeping down the cost of your motorhomes insurance premiums.
- Fit security devices.
Insurance companies like to see signs that you’re taking sensible steps to protect your interests and theirs. Fitting immobilisers and security locks to the vehicle’s doors and windows may reduce your premiums.
- Keep your mileage down.
The more you drive, the more likely you are to have an accident. That’s why insurance companies typically offer lower premiums if you commit to lower annual mileages.
- Avoid younger drivers.
Motorcaravan insurance premiums may rise the moment you try and insure younger drivers. It’s tough but youth tends to equate to inexperience and that often means a higher chance of accidents. You may find that some caravan insurance providers will actually have a minimum age for insuring a motorhome driver.
- Think about makes.
Some makes of motorhome are notoriously attractive to thieves. Their insurance premiums may be very high as a result and in some instances you may actually find it difficult to obtain cover at all. Checking this in advance of making a purchase decision could prove to be a smart idea.
- Reduce time spent overseas.
Many policies offer reductions if you spend less than a specified number of days driving the vehicle outside of the UK. Therefore, planning this at the time you take out your insurance could avoid over-estimating and paying more than is necessary.
- Don’t use for regular work / commuting.
Many policies will specifically exclude from cover the use of the vehicle for normal commuting purposes to-and-from work. Even those that don’t may significantly increase their premiums if you plan to use the vehicle at peak times for getting to work.
- Park off-road
A significant number of accidents and causal theft / vandalism happen when a vehicle is parked on public roads. If you garage your vehicle overnight or are able to park it on private property such as your driveway, you may see a reduction in your premiums.
- Join an owners’ club or similar.
Some insurers interpret membership of a recognised association or owners’ club as a sign of maturity. They may reflect that with a reduction in price.
All in all, you’re not quite as helpless in terms of needing to take what you’re offered as you may have thought. By looking carefully at your motorhomes insurance quotations and manipulating some of the above factors, you may be able to reduce your costs considerably.
