• As mentioned in an earlier article on caravan insurance, there are two types of caravan – the static caravan and the touring caravan. A touring caravan is as the name suggests, one that you tow and take with you on the road. Even though you aren’t required to obtain touring caravan insurance when you hit the road, it is strongly suggested you consider the benefits because if you were in an accident and your caravan was destroyed or beyond repair, you could lose the whole lot!

There are other hazards to consider besides potential road accidents. For example, your touring caravan could catch fire, could be broken into or stolen, you could have your valuables stolen, or your belongings could be damaged due to fire or flooding as well. Ultimately, when you are out on the road or parked in a caravan holiday spot, there are a number of elements that can damage your touring caravan. There are a number of large providers that offer touring caravan insurance as well as specialists insurers and brokers that can offer you a competitive quote by comparing the market. Touring caravan insurance doesn’t necessarily have to cost a lot however, by not being insured you could end up paying much more in the long run as well as let problems ruin your holiday, so don’t let that happen.

When comparing touring van insurance with multiple providers, try to compare policies that offer the same thing. For example, when comparing the cost of each premium, also take note of the level of excess associated with each policy. Does each provider offer “new for old” protection and if so, what are the disclaimers and exceptions, if any? Depending on the insurer, their “new for old” may also be named as market value cover. Be sure you understand exactly what this means as each policy provider may have their own definitions, especially when it comes time to pay out. Essentially, you’re looking to compare apples to apples when it comes time to select the most affordable and value-added policy.

When it comes to new for old cover, it may depend on the age of the touring caravan as to whether or not they replace the old for a brand new caravan in the event of damage beyond repair. If your touring caravan is relatively new, you should be fine. Market value cover, on the other hand, means the touring caravan insurance policy will pay out at current market value for your caravan. Another consideration would be any personal belongings or accessories that may need to be replaced due to damage or theft.
One tip to reduce the cost of your monthly premium would be to opt for a higher excess policy. This means you are willing to pay more in excess before the insurance company pays the rest. The more you are willing to pay, the lower the cost of your touring caravan insurance. Just remember that you will be required to pay this excess first!

As with anything of value that you own, the more secure you can make your caravan means a lower premium rate. Consider security alarms for the doors and windows, a tracking device, parking your touring caravan in a safe place, and so on. Always ask your provider for any tips or ways to reduce your monthly premium and you’ll on your way to enjoying affordable touring caravan insurance on your next holiday.
